Coronavirus Statutory Sick Pay Rebate Scheme

From the 26th May 2020, employers will be able to claim statutory sick pay (SSP) through a new online service – the Coronavirus Statutory Sick Pay Rebate Scheme.

The new scheme (CSSPRS) was announced at Budget and allows small and medium-sized businesses with under 250 employees to apply to HMRC for compensation for SSP given to employees during the coronavirus pandemic, beginning 13th March 2020.

The team at StreetwiseHR has done the research on your behalf to get down to the nitty-gritty, answering the questions you are most likely to have regarding this new government support scheme.

Can any business make a claim?

Unlike the government’s Furlough Scheme, the CSSPRS is only available to businesses with fewer than 250 employees.

How much can my business claim?

Employers can claim up to £191.70 per employee. That covers two weeks at the current rate of SSP (£95.85 per week). You can only claim for up to two weeks of SSP per employee.

Are all employees eligible?

To reclaim SSP for a current or former employee, they must have a PAYE payroll scheme that was created and commenced prior to 28th February 2020. All types of employee contract are covered, including agency contracts and zero-hour contracts.

What can my business claim for?

Under the new scheme, employers are able to claim SSP compensation for the following:

  • An employee is unable to work due to coronavirus;
  • An employee is self-isolating and unable to work from home;
  • An employee is shielding because they have been advised that they are high risk of severe illness.

Employees are also not required to provide a doctor’s note in order for their employer to make a claim.

What about furloughed employees?

Furloughed employees are not eligible to receive SSP and are therefore not included under the CSSPRS.
